After all of the great things I heard about this place, I have to say I was a bit let down. As a Memphis native, I am very particular to BBQ especially IN the Memphis area. I had the 2 meat plate which came with a small slab of ribs and chopped BBQ. The ribs were not bad, but nothing to write home about either. The Chopped BBQ was mushy and rather tasteless. The service was quite rude and seemed bothered by any sort of request. The place is rather small - so when it begins to get busy, one begins to feel crammed in and pressured to hurry out. This place is wayyyy over-hyped! If you are visiting Memphis, avoid this place. Try Interstate BBQ, Payne's, or even Central BBQ. That is the real Memphis deal! And they are NICE people!

The owner of this restaurant is obviously relishing in his success. He is rude and arrogant and has managed to convince his staff that customer service is of no consequence to his guests. They have a corner on the bar-b-que market (and the food is nothing special). I wouldn't darken the door of this restaurant if it was the last thing I did.

Food here is great..no doubt. The smell when you walk in is wonderful and the place stays crowded. Crowds can be a negative thing, but not in a restaurant...they are doing something right if they keep the seats filled. My 5 year old loves going to eat there, so does my husband and so do I. We all win! There is something on the menu for everyone and you should go just for the experience if nothing else. The place feels like history must have happened there and the guests that frequent the place are all nice people. The Boss Man salad is wonderful, the sauce is great and the banana pudding is simply marvelous! The only area of concern in this place is the inconsistent service we get. I saw another review about some of the wait staff being intimidating...I would have to agree. Even so, the ladies at the front counter are always gracious and courteous. Besides, there are always a few bad apples in the bunch.

Food is always delic, but there are a few servers there that almost make me scared to ask for anything extra..... rough and tough.... certainly makes the experience less than enjoyable.
Pros: food
Cons: service

i work at a hotel in germantown and this is the only place i ever recomend for the guests to go. they always come in looking for "real memphis style BBQ" with teh idea that Corky's is that. this is a farce. if you are in the area, that is the tristate area, you simply must have this BBQ.
Pros: dry or muddy ribs, pulled pork, and their locally famous sweat tea
Cons: parking lines, sometimes

Flew 1850 miles and drove 30 miles just to get ‘so-so’ BBQ. This place it rated as perhaps the “Q” in Memphis but I didn’t see it. My lunch was pork ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were dry and hard; the silver skin on the backside was like tough paper. The pulled pork was very good and their sauces were on the upside as far a sauce goes. The sweet potato fries were a little too sweet with spice. Ok would I go back? No!
Pros: Good pulled pork.
Cons: Hard tough pork ribs.

Ribs are the best, pulled pork excellent but my favorite is the smoked sausage sandwich! If in the area is a can't miss place! Fortunately my daughter and family live in Germantown and the Commissary is my first stop when there.
Pros: great food, fast service
Cons: slow on service follow-up at times, parking often difficult

The barbecue sandwiches are terrific, and so is the rest of the food. I never knew devilled eggs could be so good. The bad part is I only live 2 minutes away, so it's tough to stay out of there. Parking is a problem, though.
Pros: Devilled eggs
Cons: Parking, such as it is

My family lives IN Germantown, loves barbeque & the "down home" flavor we find here. We LUV the pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw & the desserts are out-of-this-world!!! My personal favorite is the caramel cake---with the coconut cream pie & banana pudding running a very close 2nd! I am always disappointed with the "baked beans" as they taste like warmed-up, canned pork 'n beans---needs a BIG improvement here! The ambiance is warm, cozy & old-timey! We are thrilled that we have a restaurant that is a MUST for out-of-towners!!!
Pros: Ambiance, Inexpensive, Great desserts
Cons: good parking, Flavorless beans, No personality waiter

As a former Memphian, I am confidant in saying that the Commissary has the best BBQ in town. The pulled pork has such a wonderful taste that you almost don't need the sauce. If you try to go eat at 7 pm on a Friday night, like most good BBQ places in Memphis, you will be waiting in line. However, food delivery is quick. I have a few tips for first timers. First, go early so you aren't stuck waiting in line. Second, the church across the street allows you to park in their parking lot. Finally, the best deal is to get the 6 pack to go. For $17, you get 1 lb of pulled pork, 6 buns, mild and hot sauce, a quart of beans and a pint of cole slaw. If you don't like those options, they will substitute just about sides for you at no charge.
Pros: Incredible BBQ, Great Value, Atmosphere
Cons: Parking
