If you are ready for your day to begin the right way, head over to Brother Juniper's!

I had read all the reviews, seen them on TV food shows but still, when I went with my husband and baby we didn't want to buy into all the hype as to not to be disappointed.

And so we waited outside for 15 minutes until a table cleared in this tiny "house" of a restaurant, we were seated and after looking at the very varied and interesting menu we ordered a Hungry Tiger for hubby and a San Diegan for me....

When they brought our food I thought I had died and gone to heaven only to have Brother Juniper open up the gates..... OH.MY.GAWD. Yes, it was THAT good, yes, capital letters good, silly heaven references good, fluffy bunnies, unicorns and rainbows in your plate good.

I have been back to this place often after this experience and the service and food have been consistent which is a major plus. I wonder if the wait will be that long in winter time, and if I will be able to stand a 15 minute wait in 40 degree weather....I'll start carrying an extra blanket in my car just in case....yes, its THAT good!

  • Pros: EVERYTHING
  • Cons: The parking is not the best, but overlook it (a prize waits inside if you do!)

This place will take your breakfast to a whole new level! It is hearty and healthy (organic). All of that sounds great BUT the food is not boring or bland by any means! The coffee is fabulous. I buy it for work. It is an organic rainforest blend!

  • Pros: Great food, healthy, coffee rocks!
  • Cons: the wait and it is small

Great omelettes and tofu scrambles here. Really good coffee - just the right strength. Wait can be horrendous on weekends, so get there early. Also, many tables are packed into a fairly small space, so it's not a good place if you're at all claustrophobic. No pancakes here, which surprised me to find at a breakfast place. The biscuits are yummy and very unlike a traditional biscuit. They're more whole wheaty and freeform than the tall white circle often found in the South. Both types are good, but these are more interesting. You get one with an egg order, and I always wish I had an extra biscuit, but I feel piggy ordering one. The serving sizes of everything (except biscuits) are pretty generous.

  • Pros: Good food, fair prices, vegetarian friendly
  • Cons: Small space, no panckaes, long waits unless you get there early (because of the small space)

One of the best breakfast joints in town. The food and service always seems to be top notch. I keep going back for more.

Brother Juniper's is THE most popular breakfast nook in Memphis (voted numerous times in local publications).

The menu is very health oriented, and the location is so humble and quaint.

The staff hasn't changed through the years, and after I moved away, they still recognize me when I'm home for the holidays.

One dish has been made famous by Rachel Ray: the San Diegan open face omelet. However, my favorite is still the Spanakopita omelet.

On weekends during the brunch hour, expect waits up to half an hour (this place is POPULAR), but it's generally okay during the week. But unfortunately, their hours are only until about 1 during the week and they're closed on Monday.

Also try the cinnamon roll! But unfortunately again, this place is popular...so they sometimes sell out.

I was looking for something beyond the usual 'hash-n-dash' breakfast, something that would still be on my mind several hours later. This is the one! It is a refreshing way to start the morning, with a good cup of coffee and the cheerful service of a friendly staff. The menu offers a great selection of healthy choices, and everything is prepared fresh. I have been back more than once, and have not been disappointed. They also have 'spreadable fruit' (fruit preserves) for sale, and these are wonderful as well. Ask for a sample to put on your biscuit, and you will find yourself leaving with one or two jars to share with your friends.

I found this place about a dozen years ago not long after I first moved to Memphis and spent many a happy Saturday morning there feasting on cinnamon rolls, biscuits, omelets, and fine Southern hospitality. I moved away a few years back, but when I get to Memphis for a weekend, I make sure to make it there on Saturday. Someday I may end up moving back there, and Brother Juniper's will be one of the reasons!

  • Pros: Great food, Inexpensive, Charm

I found Brother Juniper's on this website last year and visited while in Memphis in July 2002 on a family reunion. I convinced some family members to go and they went back and told everyone else. The hosts and staff were friendly, the food was absolutely delicious. We were stuffed by the time we left. My only warning is to get there early. We did and still had to wait a little. However, by the time we left, the line was long. This restaurant is in a converted house. It has a front porch, flowers in the yard, and a very comfy feel. Well worth the wait.

  • Pros: food, good parking, inexpensive
  • Cons: the wait can be long

The Scene
Large crowds congregate behind a white picket fence near the University of Memphis for the town's best breakfast. Russian Orthodox icons bedeck the interior, keeping an eye on students, professors and families moving toward their tables. Good eats and friendly service make it impossible to resist the infectious brotherly vibe radiating from this family-run establishment.

The Food
The spanakopita omelet swells with fresh spinach, onions, feta and mozarella cheese. Blackberry blintzes, bottomless cups of coffee and freshly baked bread pack in the breakfast crowd. Nothing comes out of a can here. All vegetables and fruit are sliced and sauteed to order. Black bean chili and specialty sandwiches top off the daily lunch specials. An ever-changing blackboard lists the day's fare, but sinful baked goods are a mainstay. Blueberry muffins, cardamom coffeecakes and chocolate brownies are delicious finales.
