Best BBQ in Memphis (possibly the world)
by jakker
June 26, 2006
Yes it looks like a cr@ck house - but when the BBQ is this good it doesn't matter.
The pulled pork sandwich is sublime - forget the shredded mess you find in most BBQ joints - the glistening slices of beautiful, saucy pork is the way to go. The ribs are even better - can be tough sometimes during peak hours or if there is a big crowd in Memphis but still fantastic. Forget the slaw and go double beans - cover it all in the "Super Hot" sauce and you have a match made in heaven. For the feint of heart the hot sauce will do the trick nicely.
No tipping! Love it.

Featured on Diner, Dive's and Drive-Ins, and this compelled me to go and check it out, especially after hearing that one of their secret ingredients in their rub is every SWEET CEREAL EATERS cupborad, " Captain Crunch," but I must say the ambience....well there wasn't any. The "Cornish Hen", that is like a signature item was ok, the meat was soaked in sauce (a que-ologist's nightmare) and to make it worst the sauce wasn't that great, nor was the meat "falling" off the bone....you had to tear it away with you incisors.
Is it worth a visit, yeah if you not looking for the best, but rather something edible. The people behind the counter were seriously pleasant and polite...triple thumbs up for them, but I thumb-wrestling with myself to give Cozy Corner's a complete and confident thumbs up!
- Pros: Different
- Cons: Not enough food for the money. No combo or sampler for the real que-ologist.
Get past shabby appearances for real-deal, rub-smothered barbecue that's worth getting sloppy for.

The Scene
Located in a nondescript strip of shops, this joint hops with locals, St. Jude workers and the occasional tourist in search of "real" Memphis barbecue. Order from friendly staff at the counter--where you can watch slabs of ribs smoke in the pit oven--then retreat to a cracked plastic booth in the '70s-era dining room. Don't miss the wall of famous fans, including Robert Duval and local Cybill Shepherd.
The Food
Sauce-saturated barbecue is served on Styrofoam plates and cafeteria trays, but what's lost in presentation is more than made up for in flavor. Meaty, roll-up-your-sleeves ribs come with white sandwich bread, soggy slaw and tangy barbecue spaghetti. A Cornish hen requires hard work with plastic utensils, but ultimately delivers tender meat smoked with potent seasoning. Order it mild for a piquant kick or hot to get the sweat glands going.

People here rave about it but I'm just not getting what the hoopla is all about. It's good but not great. The sauce is a litttle watery for my taste. The ribs were a bit dry. Maybe it was just the day and I should give it a second shot. If the group wants to go there, I'll but but won't make a special trip.
Price is right

Food was good, be careful of the hot sauce. You can get hurt eating an excessive amount of this stuff. Rather pricey. A rib going for 1.50 per is rather steep. Should consider reducing their price.
- Pros: tender, tasty
- Cons: expensive, crowded

Go to the "Big" names and miss out on the best ribs in town, or anywhere for that matter. you truely need to eat them to understand. None of the majors has food this good and with the same "beat of the city" appeal. A must do when in Memphis.
- Pros: The ribs
- Cons: None

i have lived in memphis for over 10 years and have
been to all the top bbque joints. this place has the best flavored ribs in memphis, if these ribs where
more tender they would be one of the tops in u.s.a.
great tasting ribs just need a little more tenderness.
- Pros: fast service, great taste, lots of meat
- Cons: decour
