Didn't live up to the hype

by joeblow3 at Citysearch

My wife and I were really excited to check out this place after seeing the video Dyer's has on their website. It was part of a TV show about fried foods across America. We were seriously diasppointed in the burgers. Maybe they're an aquired taste but to me the burgers were small, plain, and flavorless. I hate to say it but I'd rather have a $1 doublecheeseburger from McDonald's. Service was ok, and I recall the fries being better than the burgers. We were just passing through town so our experience may be an anomoly. Perhaps on a busier day the grease would be hotter or something.

  • Pros: Famous. History.
  • Cons: Food.

FORGET ABOUT IT...NOT WORTH IT

by RockyTopFlash at Citysearch

We visit Beale Street every time we even drive through Memphis...we have given Dyers two chances now and each time IT WAS A DISASTER.

The service is terrible...the burger is terrible...the price is high for a lousy burger.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR YOUR MONEY...

Fool me Once...shame on you...Fool me twice shame on me...there will not be another attempt.

  • Pros: THERE IS NOTHING GOOD ABOUT THIS PLACE

Disappointing food, service, and atmosphere

by vudu at Citysearch

I read online about the "legendary" 100-year-old grease, and heard that these burgers have been voted the best in Memphis. I also read that the entire burger -- meat, bun, and all -- was deep-fried. This sounded disgustingly great, and my friends and I wanted to try it. We made this our last stop before we left Memphis, and looked forward to it all weekend. This was the only disappointing part of our visit. The waiter was sullen and had a bad attitude. The burgers were not deep-fried meat, bun, and all, but the thin patty did taste like it had been dipped in grease -- and not in a good way. The fries were soggy -- also not in a good way. There was hardly anybody in there, and our orders were simple, but my friend asked for no onions or pickles, and there were onions and pickles on his burger. The waiter was so surly we didn't even leave a tip -- and we never do that. Don't waste your time on this place. We wish we had eaten our last meal in Memphis at a more worthwhile place.

  • Pros: Relatively cheap
  • Cons: Bad food, bad service, bad atmosphere

Infringement

by Dyerssucks at Citysearch

They stole the name of one of their burgers. The "Double-Double" is the name of a burger from a resturant called "In-N-Out"in California. If the cops find they can close you down. If I were you I would either change the name or take it off the menu. In-N-Out was made way before 1912. I'd watch your back if I was you.

Truly Dissapointed

by krabob15 at Citysearch

This was not my first visit, and had I written a review prior to my current visit it would have been very good. Unfortunately my visit in the early evening of 3/12/08 was not a good experience at all. The cook chose to "pre-make" the burgers, and then let them soak in the frying grease until ready to be served. Needless to say, the "oil pickeled" burgers that were fished out of the pan were very cold, and soaked with cold frying oil. The cheese did not even melt. When we mentioned this to the cook, he then heated the oil (which took about 10 minutes) then made us another burger which was considerably better than the first. But the experience of the first, and the attitude as if we put him out was a little more than I cared to deal with. I won't be back.

  • Pros: Unique Product when properly prepared.
  • Cons: Cutting corners is not where it's at for me.

great-simple burger w/interesting history

by janamitchell at Citysearch

i grew up in Memphis and i was there when they "moved" the seperated grease to new store-

sounds ludicrous but was very entertaining, hype or not ! and the burgers really are great.

yes they are small-imagine an original McDonald's burger but the flavor from the grease is what

makes it soo good. I worked at Mcdonald's on Summer Ave as a teenager and we used the same

grease/oil over and over and just screened the impurities out at night; as long as grease is kept covered

and strained should be able to reuse indefinitely!

  • Pros: simple burger-great for lunch or a snack
  • Cons: price is much higher than it use to be

O.K. for the price.... a little overrated

by msmommie01 at Citysearch

Well, my nail tech was having a burger there, so I sent for one..... She spoke as if it was totally, completely awesome.... When I got it, it was very small (a real hamburger) and the condiments were very limited. It was good though.... I wish I had known it was soooo small; I would have gotten two.

  • Pros: it was fresh
  • Cons: none

great burgers at a good price

by tupelo5fan at Citysearch

we were there before we went on beale street and i needed somthing to eat and i have to say it was one of the best burgers that i ever had. I only say this because i own a hamburger place in tupelo ms. called Knight's Drive Inn on McCullough Blvd and i can tell when its fresh hamburger meat or not. The only thing i asked when i got there was if it was good or not and the waitress should have said it was the best burger in memphis and would not have been lying

Best in Memphis

by flooey123 at Citysearch

The two prior written reviews to mine need to be addressed as being ludicrous, that Dyer's should be insinuated as being some sort of substandard burger establishment. Oh, please, give me a break, that Dyer's would serve "cold" hamburgers, or is not as good as Rally's (Now called "Checker's") or Sonic. The thing melts in your mouth, people. Aww, cold burger? Well, have a nice hot McDonald's cardboard burger. You bite into a Dyer's burger, and you know you are getting 100% real beef, and not some filler crap. Not enough meat? Well, try Dyer's "Filthy Diablo" burger, with three patties and Polish sausage piled in between, and three slices of cheese. If that doesn't stuff your face, nothing will. Anyone will tell you that the best burgers come from the mom and pop places...Not the boring chain establishments. Dyer's is better than all of those, even Huey's!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Great food, Good service
  • Cons: Can be crowded

sorry stuff

by olecat at Citysearch

I have been to Dyers' once in my 59 years and it was the worst food I've ever had-hamburger or anything else. The meat was COLD as was the bun (it was COLD as if it was just taken out of the refrigerator) and the cheese on the hamburger was just as cold-

I called to complain and was offered a FREE hamburger meal. If I get sorry food when I

pay for it, what will I get when I get it free? No Dyers' for me and I'm sure Grandad is

turning over in his grave!!!!!!
