awful food, awful drinks, awful service
by gelat
The food was completley terrible. 4 out of 5 dishes were very cold. One member ordered the Tuna seared rare it came out well done, when they brought her a new one is was just raw. and the chef poured way to much sauce to cover it up. obviously a ticked off move. The rest of us where just hungary cause we waited so long so I ate my cold gross tenderloin. They did take two entrees off but no manager was every seen. The drinks took fiftteen minutes and werent any better. My party was out to celebrate an upcoming wedding and ready to party and spend big, but this place ruined our mood big time. Will never go back and everyone stay away!
- Pros: none
Really bad service
by Fyodor76
We have been to Automatic Slim's three or four times. The first time we were very impressed with the food and the service was reasonable. Our most recent visit will most definitely be the last. The service was the worse I have ever experienced. There were two members of the waitstaff, one male and one female, both of whom served us, but they were extremely busy and the restaurant was clearly understaffed. The waitress had to serve at the bar as well as wait tables. The waiter was both inattentive and downright rude. He made several mistakes with our order, and failed to bring us water on a couple of occasions. When he asked us how the food was, he did not wait for an answer but merely walked away. Our request for the bill was also repeatedly ignored. Also the red snapper was extremely overcooked and very dry. When we complained about the service at the end, the waiter was very defensive and not at all apologetic. We left a full 15% tip, but will never be going back, and will stop recommending the place to our friends. I can only assume that the downtown location has affected the quality. Do yourself a favor and go to the Beauty Shop instead.
- Cons: Really unpleasant and rude service
Nothing 'automatic' here, other than paying too much

At least it's different but the quality of food is suspect, the place is downtown..not bad for cocktails, etc, but I wouldn't waste my time, there's nothing on the menu that is truly outstanding at all, I think the theme is a bit overdone on the menu...jerkk this jerkkk that, odd combinations of flavours which are not really carribean at all...my take...PASS
Consistently Great!
by gourmet_aficionado
This is one of our favorite restaurants and we are always satisfied with the food and friendly service. Our most recent visit started with superbly made cocktails and the spring rolls appetizer. We were feeling rather carnivorous on this trip and had the Jerk of the Day, which was a steak and the filet mignon. The jerk steak was perfectly seasoned and not too spicy, and was paired with rice, beans, and plantains. We have tried the jerk duck and that was equally delicious. The filet was cooked to our medium request and was arranged on top of slices of grilled red onion and tomato and topped off with crispy green onions. We are always pleased with the friendly staff, wonderful food, great wine selection, and of course, the cocktails!
- Pros: Atmosphere, Creative Food, Good Parking

One of Memphis' best
by jonesgp1996
Automatic Slim's is one of Memphis' best restaurants of any kind. The food is simply delicious, and there are always numerous options from which to choose. They have a cocktail menu that changes from time to time, giving a variety of new drinks to try. And their coffee, a Hawaiian hazelnut, is the best coffee I have ever tasted - I wish they sold it in stores. When I want a complete and satisying (good food, service, ambiance) dining experience, this is where I go. When we have guests visit from out of town, this is where my wife and I take them to showcase Memphis restaurants.
- Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere
- Cons: Smoky bar & 1st floor
The food is as eclectic as the decor is eccentric at this vibrant downtown hangout.

The Scene
Automatic Slim's is simply the coolest place to see and be seen in Memphis--even El-Vez, the Mexican Elvis impersonator, makes regular appearances at this trendy eatery. Some of Hollywood's finest have stopped by, like Susan Sarandon, Tom Cruise and Francis Ford Coppola. It's ecclectic, for sure: Slim's is known for bar sports stools covered in faux-zebra skins and vats of fresh-fruit-spiked vodka.
The Food
The cuisine is Southwestern via the Caribbean, with a twisted skewering of Memphis and New York thrown in to mix things up. As a result, you'll find a menu that bounces from cilantro-studded cheese quesadillas to Jamaican jerk pork and sweet corn muffins. Be sure to save room for the flavorful coffees with dessert.
Eclectic Caribbean

Nice Atmosphere! A welcome change in a city full of BBQ restaurants. Restaurant twists standard caribbean dishes such as jerk with untraditional meats such as duck breast.
