I have lived here all my life and finally went here - it was an awesome experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting; the staff was attentive but not overwhelming. We sat near the grill and got to watch them prepare the food which was interesting. I ordered grilled chicken breast (it came with 2 pieces so I had leftovers for lunch) and it was the best chicken I've ever eaten. The salad bar is adequate but you have to ask for bacon bits and cheese from the kitchen. Prices are average for a steakhouse. The other neat thing is the meat counter - you see them pick out your meat before they cook it.

Sucker punched.

by adamh83 at Citysearch

As an unsuspecting traveler visiting Memphis for a week on business, I decided I would celebrate the passing of mid-week and dine at a "quality" steakhouse. I narrowed my search down to two: Butcher Shop or Majestic Grille. I gambled.. and I lost. I expressed to the waiter that I was having trouble deciding between the rib-eye and the New York strip. He recommended rib-eye. Right on buddy.. If you like your steak 60-70% fat then this is the place for you. After I finished the meal he saw my plate and the war zone created by my attempts to find a legitimate piece of meat and had the audacity to comment that "maybe I should choose the New York strip next time." Next time? Yea.. probably not. If you are in Memphis and looking for a good steak please dine anywhere except the Butcher Shop.

  • Pros: Close walk to my hotel
  • Cons: The Steak

Not my favorite, but still very very good!!

by sierraskyesmom at Citysearch

Butcher Shop is one of those places that my mind doesnt automatically jump to when we're heading out for a steak. Usually its between Ruths Chris and Folks Folly (and Ruths Chris usually wins - they have better sides) But sometimes we're burnt out on RC and sometimes we just dont want to drive that far. Thats when the Butcher Shop usually pops into my head. The steaks are good...I have never prepared my own. Like some others have said - whats the point in that?!?! The spinach artichoke dip is, in my opinion, the best in the city. Even better than Houstons. Yup. The potatoes....the ones served with cheese in a gratin dish? Oh. My. Goodness. They are *so* good....skip the baked potato and try them! We go to the one on G-Town Pkwy and they have patio seating. Also another draw when the weather is nice and you want to sit outside!

Big Disappointment

by kustkaf at Citysearch

Arrived and was quickly seated. Ordered beer and soft drink. Informed by surly manager that one grill was down and that no customer steak preparation on the other grill was possible. Left.

  • Pros: nice atmosphere, good location
  • Cons: surly management

Did not meet the expectations

by vivkeeler at Citysearch

The staff is friendly and they sit you promply but the food is not that great. they give you a choice to cook your own steak or have it cook by the chef (cooking my steak, is't that why I went out to eat in the fist place, because I did not want to cook) neadless to say we had the food cook by the chef and it was tastesless. I do not recomend this place.

  • Pros: Friendly staff, sit promply, ambiance
  • Cons: food is not great

Great deal for the $$$

by basilrx at Citysearch

My gf and I could have eaten the spin dip and cajun shrimp alone and been happy, but our filets were too good to ignore. This place has Folk's and R. Chris beat hands down. It's just a good, basic steakhouse without fuss or formality. They also don't charge extra for 'loaded' baked potatoes like some other places in town. Our waiter was excellent and we never had to ask for a thing - he also didn't bug us either.

The Best Ever!

by oglestien at Citysearch

I have visited Memphis three times, and eaten at both locations. Each time, I've ordered the 14 oz. Filet, eaten every delicious bite, and have yet to pick up a steak knife. It's that tender! I've had far less quality steaks elsewhere for far more money. Nobody serves a 14 oz. filet, and those that come close charge a whole lot more! Two weeks ago, I visited the Dallas location, and the steak was just as awesome. Worth the trip from anywhere in the country!

  • Pros: Biggest Filet, Two Locations, Best Price
  • Cons: Not one where I live

Good fro two

by ducksnquackers at Citysearch

I wouldn't take the entire family, but it would be good for a night out on the town. Could get pricey. The service was good, but it is extremely noisey and you do sit close together. You can oick out your own steak, I like that.

  • Pros: good steak, clean, service
  • Cons: price, parking, noise factor

Great steaks!

by littlequeenie at Citysearch

Not sure why this restaurant is listed under West Memphis but in any case, I have very fond memories of this downtown restaurant--sorry to hear quality is not the same. They used to have great steaks at a very reasonable price I though. Fun place--service just so-so though.

  • Pros: Great steaks, Fun place, Good value
  • Cons: , Hard to park

Demonstrate your barbecue bravado to friends and family at this do-it-yourself eatery.

The Scene

It's got the typical ambiance of any steak house -- dark wood and the savory aroma of sizzling meat in the air. The difference? You get to grill your own dinner over hickory briquettes on a pit barbecue. This interactive dining experience pulls in plenty of groups looking for something different, but the dining room grills are big, so you'll never have to wait to cook your steak.

The Food

Steak choices vary from eight to 24 ounces and include tenderloin, T-bone, ribeye, and New York and Kansas City strips. Don't care for red meat? The kitchen prepares chicken and salmon as well, but you won't have the fun of cooking your own dinner. A house salad, baked potato and Texas toast rounds out the meaty meals. If you've still got the room, get a slice of the housemade cheesecake for dessert.
