Editorial Review for Memphis Symphony Orchestra – by Linda Romine
The Scene:
Currently performing at Eudora Baptist Church at Poplar and Perkins in East Memphis while construction on a new downtown performing arts organization gets underway, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra sustains a loyal following of concertgoers who subscribe to its classical and pops concert series. The talented group of part-time and professional musicians is led by David Loebel, now in his second season with the group. From Mozart to Mahler, the symphony has a firm command of the orchestral repertoire, presenting all of the tried-and-true warhorses of classical music interspersed with more modern American compositions. Presentations of Handel's "Messiah," as well as annual programs devoted to the Rev. Martin Luther King and even Elvis Presley, round out the offerings. The group also plays at popular outdoor events such as the Dixon Gallery and Gardens' outdoor picnics, and at its own Sunset Symphony concert, a widely attended event held on the banks of the Mississippi River during the culmination of the annual Memphis In May International Festival.
