The enlightening $3.75 million entity, opened in 1998 inside the historic fire engine house No.1 downtown, features displays of antique firefighting equipment, uniforms and machinery..
History:
Paying homage to the heroism of firefighters is one of the noble aims of one of the city's newest tourist attractions, the Fire Museum of Memphis. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to experience the heat and other sensations caused by fire; safety rules and survival skills are also stressed. Children may try on firefighters' gear, climb aboard a fire engine, or slide down a slick brass pole at the sound of an imaginary alarm. The most moving facet of the museum is the sobering memorial to city firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The relatively new venue does a commendable job of taking a serious subject and making it both interesting and informative.
Don't Miss:
The most novel element of the museum is its talking animatronic horse.
