Editorial Review for Ballet Memphis – by Linda Romine
The Scene:
Ballet Memphis may be the city's finest performing arts group. Founded in 1985 by artistic director Dorothy Gunther Pugh, the organization has grown from a small amateur company into a fully professional corps that has garnered rave reviews for its staging of virtually all of the full-length ballets of the classical repertoire, including "Swan Lake," "Coppelia," "Sleeping Beauty," "Giselle," and "Romeo and Juliet." Contemporary dance numbers, including world premieres of works based on the music of Elvis Presley, Al Green, Paul Simon, and others, also keep the dancers and audiences on their toes. The international dancers come from throughout the U.S., Russia, and beyond. In addition to its four full-length productions each season, presented in the historic and elegant Orpheum Theatre in downtown Memphis, the company also stages the "Nutcracker" each December.
Must Have Drinks:
Champagne (at the Orpheum during intermission).
