Memphis >French Riviera Spa
Highly Recommended Gym. Highly recommended! This will be the feedback I would like to provide to the management of French Riviera Spa. The program you made for diet is good and I know I can continuously follow it. It is actually okay and making myself more physically fit or healthy coupled with the workouts. I am getting my desired weight and I feel better everyday.
24 hours on weekdays kind of gym. French Riviera Spa is very near the University of Memphis. Students, faculty and staffs are enjoying doing work-outs even on a late night schedule since it is ope 24 hours on weekdays. this is to accommodate the needs of others so they can conveniently keep their goals of having regular exercises.
A safe and clean fitness center. if you are looking for a place where you can work-out conveniently, choose a fitness program at French Riviera Spa. They have diverse fitness courses that you can use to keep healthy and relaxed as well. you can choose between kickboxing, step, pilates and yoga. All these and more are offered in these well planned and maintained fitness center.
please read!. i only rated them with one star if no stars were a possibility that is what they would get. i hope that other people are able to see this before signing a contract they are not able to get out of . I had called today to ask them what was fixed with the extra money that i was charged( yes if you sign their contract beware they have a fee every 6 months to "fix " things that dont get fixed) and i was told about a lot of things that already existed. like tvs or spin bikes. i would do anything to get out of this membership but they make it completely impossible. their equiptment at poplar location rarely works (try some of the treadmills and watch how they wont turn on) and if it does it is most certainly dirty. their salesmen are extrmemly aggresive towards any female that walks in the door, its very uncomfortable. and very few staff members there even know what customer service is . they are impolite over the phone and constantly act like it is out of their way to be talking with you. PLEASE what ever you do dont make the mistake of signing up at this gym
Not the best gym. They are illegal in many ways. They breach contracts and do not fulfill on fixing or maintaining anything. I wish I had not joined and it has only been a week. There equipment is dirty and not well maintained. They lie and their salesmen try to sleep with every girl there. It is quite disturbing. Sexual harassment is guaranteed. They also have no access to public drinking water. They do not stock bottled water in their machines and this is illegal in Tenn. The staff is not friendly either.
As others have said, spend the money and join elsewhere.
I have been a member of French Riviera Spa on an off the mid 1980s. I rejoined when the Poplar and Highland first opened and when they had the women's only in Germantown. In the past year and a half, the Poplar/Highland location has gotten so bad on so many levels that I am not renewing and am willing to pay more to work out elsewhere, even though this location is convenient and the price is dirt cheap. However, the saying, "you get what you pay for" is so true in this case.
This gym is so dirty, that I worry about catching something. I'm a tightwad, but not to the degree that I'll chance getting ill from my thriftiness.
What is also disturbing is that the last time I renewed, a one time $30 fee was added to my renewal. Well, now that $30 is there again, but built into the renewal fees. That's deception. Anyone who's been a member of FRS throughout the years knows that some of their people who sign you are less than truthful.
The reasons I'm not renewing this time and will be joining elsewhere:
#1 reason is that it's DISGUSTINGLY DIRTY.
The dressing and shower areas are consistently dirty. The paper towel machines often lack paper. The toilets are often clogged.
The equipment is often broken and dirty.
The free weights in the women's area are taken by people taking an aerobics class, so there are no free weights, and then they are too lazy to replace them. You often have to hunt down free weights since the staff isn't good about keeping them where they should be. When I've spoken to management about it, nothing comes of it. You'd think they'd spend a little money and get weights for the cardio room only, but no, they'd rather paint the building to lure in new customers.
The new carpet is often dirty.
They recently did a lot of painting. The place needs an overhaul in management, not painting. I guess the new paint is good for luring in people who don't know better.
The good: location, cheap membership, lots of classes at night, open 7 days a week with good hours, lots of treadmills (but several don't work properly), free weights (but the best ones are in the men's area) and machines (a lot are broken and rarely repaired)
If you don't want to pay a lot and can put up with a dirty gym whose clientele is often loud and crude and whose management is nonexistent, then you'll probably be happy with this place. As for me, I want a clean gym where the equipment works and so does the management.
Very Bad Management (Manager Napolean).
I have been a member of french riviera for the past 4 years. I have always promptly paid in full every year.
I generally workout 6 days a week
Today on July 25, 2010 I was doing my workout and was interrupted by manager Napolean implying that they did not have documentation of my membership since 2006. I replied there must be a mistake. He replied that they don't make mistakes and that I couldn't finish my workout that day unless I had documentation to prove otherwise..
In my opinion the statement admitting you don't make mistakes is very arrogant in itself especially in a management position.
Long story short, after about an hour of arguing he found I was in there system just someone had put me in the system twice. My response after ruining my workout and day was you did make a mistake and I expect atleast an apology. His response was someone else on staff made the mistake of putting me in the system twice and he had nothing to appologize for.
It is very frustrating when random people are placed in management positions that have no idea how to handle the responsiblites that come with that authority .
Bad Customer Service.
The staff here are the worst I have experienced at a health facility. When you walk into the place, the people at the counter act as if you have disturbed their nap. They usually say nothing at all. If they greet you at all, it is an insincere grunt. The people on the floor, if there are any, are not helpful.
Where do they get these people?
Also, the shower area is poorly drained. There is usually water all over the floors. Avoid this place if you can. Pay a little extra and go to a good facility. Don't be lured by their lower prices. It isn't worth it.
Breach of Contract for Lifetime Membership?.
About 20 years ago, the Tenn. state law concerning spa memberships was changed to pay a onetime fee of $150 and $5 a year life membership fee. In hopes of a French Riviera building close to where I live, I have continued to pay the nominal fee according to the state contract rules, even though I have not worked out at the their spa during this time. I still have my Tenn. contract.
Today I noticed when paying the fee that it has jumped to $35. I DO believe lifetime membership means lifetime as I am not dead. So I wonder if there will be any type of class action suit for this breach of contract?
DO NOT JOIN ANY FRENCH RIVIERA SPA!!!!!. I have been a lifetime member since 1986 with a locked in renewal rate of $5.00 per year. When I got my yearly renewal it was $35.00. I was told the additional $30 was a "facility improvement fee". I have complained to the Better Business Bureau. They should not be allowed to add a fee to a locked-in contract! I would highly encourage anyone with the same problem to file a complaint with their local BBB!! Maybe if they receive enough complaints they will remove this fee.
