Memphis >Sekisui Pacific Rim
Awful experience. We were visiting Memphis and a friend recommended it. Our appetizer tasted good. However, when we got our sushi, two of our rolls tasted bad. One roll had a bad plastic taste and the other roll did not taste fresh. It seemed to be spoiled. According to the manager, they beat their tuna before rolling it. If I wanted raw tuna, I should have told the waiter. I never was given an option by the waiter and had no clue there was that option. When we told the waiter that the Sushi did not taste right and would like to order something in its place he said he'd check to see if the restaurant would replace it. Otherwise, we would have to pay for another entree. When the manager finally showed up, she was very rude and defensive. She defended the preparation and completely ignored our concerns. She did agree to credit us for the rolls, but she continued to defend the Sushi. We would not recommend this place to anyone. I've never been to a restaurant where the wait staff and manager defend the food when a patron does not like it or thinks it is spoiled. They need to learn some customer service skills. It was awful! I will never go here again.
Editorial Review. Sushi, Japanese cuisine, and fusion dishes, plus sake, specialty cocktails and creative desserts like tempura cheesecake.
Good for Memphis.
As many reviews state on Citysearch, because Memphis has few choices to offer, a good number of average restaurants receive high marks. Sekisui deserves a good but not great mark.
My wife and I love sushi and were regulars when living in San Fran, Portland and Boston. I can't put my finger on why my lunch experience on Poplar didn't register higher. However after laying down $28 I didn't walk away with thinking I had just had a $28 experience. In fact, I felt a bit swindled. No beer, no sake - just water and sushi.
And maybe most importantly, I didn't go home telling my wife, "We HAVE to go there for dinner sometime."
Again, you won't find better sushi in Memphis but Sekisui would be #72 on the list in any other town.
Best we've found in Memphis. We're used to sushi restaurants in California, where you have a lot more to choose from. It's not the best we've ever had, but it's definitely the best in Memphis. Nice ambiance. Fresh fish. And enough cooked items to not scare of your friends who can't deal with raw fish. The service was good and we had a very pleasant time.
World Class. The service and the atmosphere are reason enough to go. The food will keep you coming back. If you are lucky, ask for Richard. He is the best server I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Sushi, steak, seafood, and fun all rolled into one excellent package. The techno music playing in the background and the mood lighting make it a great place to take a date or a group of friends. A great place to meet up before going clubbing on weekends. Sekisui Pacific Rim is a MUST!!! See you there.
too cool for memphis. We ate here on a Saturday. They had live DJs playing stylish acid jazz type music with a heavy beat. The food is spectacular. The atmosphere is like nothing else in Memphis; like what you find in trendy New York restaurants. Very funky, sit on the floor in bean bags or on pillows or at the sushi bar. Colorful lighting, abstract art, and a wall of water create a very surreal atmosphere. Go on a night when thet have the DJs playing. Awesome experience.
