Editorial Review for Blues City Cafe – by Linda Romine
The Scene:
At the corner of Second and Beale, facing B.B. King's Blues Club, sits the faux Delta shack that was formerly a Doe's Eat Place. The late, great blues guitarist Albert King helped open the club in the early 1990s, but today it is the Blues City Cafe. Shrimp, steaks, and spicy tamales are on the menu, along with icy cold Coca-Cola and beer. Thick block glass windows, Formica fixtures and chrome furniture contribute to that sense of time and place. While you're noshing on greasy goodies, you can gaze out through the large picture-window views of Beale Street. A tiny, adjacent room known as the Band Box is where live blues music can be heard, if not always seen. There's only space enough for a few bodies to cram inside, although the music reverberates loud and clear, throughout the restaurant and outside onto the street as well.
Must Have Drinks:
Budweiser, served so cold it hurts.

Succulent ribs, the meat tender and beautifully spiced. I did not find them as saucy as others said. Don't bother with an appetizer - you'll be stuffed with the ribs and other entrees looked even larger. A great spot - just avoid Sundays; they are off their game on an off night. On a Sunday visit, the ribs and beans arrived cold with blazing hot fries. That was fixed fast enough, and the warm ribs were comfort food that few can match. The sauce is fabulous too. It's great that it's open late, and they are very welcoming if you are on your own. Enjoy!
Pros: Delicious food, friendly service.
Cons: A dive - not really a "Con."

We went in here without knowing what a gem we'd found. I had to buy a bottle of their BBQ sauce and now wish I'd bought a case -- and that was a week ago! The next time we go to Memphis we are making a bee-line to the Blue City Cafe.
