Underwhelmed and over annoyed..
I visited the Brushmark on a Tuesday in mid October for the first time in several months, as I am an out of towner. The hostess sat my table promptly, and we were immediately greeted with a fancy bread basket and water upon seating, which was a relief as it was a hot day. So far so good.
It was apparently busy because the plain clothed female manager handled our food orders as opposed to one of the servers. The food took EXTRA long. Several times I asked passing servers as to whether or not we could expect our food soon. When my burger finally arrived along with my mother's salad, the manager dropped the well done sirloin on the floor with the plate shattering everywhere. It took another 25 minutes for my burger to arrive well after my companion was done. When the food finally did come it was tasty but not up to Wally Joe's usual standards that I've experienced in his other eateries.
All in all the food was uninspired, the servers seemed harried and distracted and the management was green and apathetic to the needs of her patrons. It was different when I was a customer 7 months ago - I'm very disappointed.
This restaurant in the Brooks Museum of Art offers elegant dining and unsurpassed views of Overton Park..
The Scene
Outside, the museum has a grand, turn-of-the-century facade. Inside, great masterpieces hang in the corridors leading toward the restaurant. Elegant and refined, this a chic place for lunch with a friend or a romantic dinner for two on evenings when the restaurant is open for special occasions. Wherever you sit, there's a perfect view of Overton Park--windows line the front wall and a covered patio makes for great summertime luncheons.
The Food
African peanut soup, full of chicken and spice, is a refreshing change from the ordinary. Sun-dried cranberries, hearts of palm and roasted walnuts top fresh tossed greens. Grilled yellowfin tuna is tucked between sesame bread, topped with spicy giardiniera sauce. Crepes, stuffed with succulent crab and topped with red pepper relish, are artfully delicious. Light entrees like grilled salmon and kiwi salsa or shrimp scampi are a perfect afternoon treat. Wind down with amaretto cheesecake and a robust cup of coffee.
